Certain conditions will exempt some individuals and families from the requirement to purchase medical insurance or face a tax penalty for non-coverage.
“Those who are exempt include unauthorized immigrants, people with income low enough that they are not required to file a tax return; people below 138 percent of the federal poverty guidelines; people who are incarcerated; or members of Indian tribes.” Other hardship exemptions may also be allowed.
